BRITISH CHIPS

People rarely make homemade chips in Britain. I do not blame them. Just as French fries are widely available in the United States, you can get chips—British thick-cut fried potatoes—just about anywhere in the U.K. Shatteringly crisp with a soft, fluffy interior, British chips are something of a marvel when done right and are especially delicious when you season them liberally with a dash of salt and malt vinegar. The spuds are a staple food at pubs, chip shops, and restaurants, and like fries, they are available frozen at the grocery store.

Though they are easily found in the United Kingdom, they are not as common in the U.S., where people generally prefer thinner fries. I am going to diplomatically say that one is not better than the other; they are just different iterations of fried potatoes, a category of food I think we can all get behind. (If you do not like crispy potatoes, who even are you???)

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.

Clearly stated in the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Directive on “Strategy on Cultural Diplomacy: Vision through to 2030” (released in 2021) is the goal of “promoting the image of the country and people of Vietnam in the international.” As the regime recently declared to implement “transformative, flexible and creative cultural diplomacy,” V-pop seems to offer the appropriate tool for the job. V-pop, just like any other music, carries a certain level of flexibility and creativity from the major involvement of non-state actors that state-centric advocacy of Vietnam’s national image, such as Vietnam Week in different countries in the world, cannot afford.

Quoc Trung, a seasoned music producer/composer, noticed that Vietnam proudly possesses several cultural heritages and historical traditions which are inadequately exploited by the music industry. Hoang Thuy Linh seems to know the key to this puzzle. Through her music production since 2017, Linh has consistently delivered a modern colorful interpretation of traditional symbols of Vietnamese culture in combination with her storytelling representation to widely attract teenager audiences and embrace relatable messages, such as self-love as the main theme for “See Tình”. Some cultural relics found in “See Tình” music video include the traditional melody of “Cai Luong,” a signature traditional music common in the Mekong Delta area of Southern Vietnam at the start, and Linh’s choice of image placement to showcase Vietnamese traditional cuisine, lifestyle and costume in a vibrant tone.

A potential formula can be sketched as a guidance to orient V-pop toward cultural diplomacy comprised of pop demonstration of traditional cultural elements shown along upbeat music and simple choreography that firstly targets short video platforms and dance covers in addition to directing audiences to long video platforms like YouTube, and consequent exposure them to Vietnamese culture.

        A. The position of V-pop in the international rank.

        B. Quoc Trung - a seasoned music producer/composer.

        C. “See Tình” Formula for National Image Projection.

        D. The goal of promoting the country internationally.

Question 35: According to the passage, what did Quoc Trung notice?

        A. Vietnam possesses several cultural heritages and historical traditions.

        B. The music industry does not fully make use of Vietnamese materials.

        C. Hoang Thuy Linh knows how to solve the current puzzle in Vietnam.

        D. In Vietnam, there are few seasoned music producers/composers.

Question 36: The word "attract" in the 2nd paragraph is closest in meaning to_________.

        A. captivate             B. identify            C. diversify           D. customize

        A. conventional            B. original             C. popular           D. latest

B. Linh included “Cai Luong” melody in her song.

        C. Quoc Trung is an experienced music producer.

        D. Cai Luong is a typical genre in Northern Vietnam.

Question 39: The word "them" in the final paragraph refers to _________.

        A. audiences        B. long videos        C. platforms        D. short videos

Question 40: It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ______________.

A. short videos are effective to promote culture.

B. V-pop can be used as a tool for cultural diplomacy.

Over the past few decades, the term ‘Hallyu’, which translates to “Korean Wave”, has made its way to the global stage. The rapid growth of the Hallyu market owes its success to meticulously crafted domestic cultural strategies and unwavering government support. Following the Asian financial crisis in 1997, President Kim Dae-jung envisioned a national cultural strategy to revive the economy. Since then, South Korea’s cultural industry has been on an upward tendency. Amongst the latest ranking of most-subscribed-to YouTube accounts, BLACKPINK secures the global top spot of artists, followed by BTS in second place and Justin Bieber in third place. The exportation of cultural industries vividly showcases the escalating influence of Hallyu, now a trump card for South Korea in improving its soft power.

BLACKPINK’s recent presence at Buckingham Palace is not the first time South Korean idol groups have stepped onto the diplomatic stage. Thanks to the huge fan base and influence of these groups, they have become a common sight before foreign affairs visits and leader summits. Back in May 2022, BTS held an audience with US President Joe Biden at the White House, discussing matters concerning anti-Asian hate and racial discrimination. According to the ‘2021 National Image Survey’ by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, a striking 80.5% of foreigners positively evaluated South Korea’s national image. Undoubtedly, the Hallyu wave molds South Korea’s national image on their political and cultural fronts.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.

Spoken by 68 million people in the world, Italian is the only official language of two countries (Italy and...can you guess the second one? The answer is at the end of this passage!) and one of the official languages of the European Union, the Vatican, and Switzerland.

As we have mentioned before, from a linguistic perspective Italian is a neo-Latin as known as romance language, and its history is intertwined with poetry and literature. We owe to Dante Alighieri and his Divina Commedia - written in his native Florentine language - the standardization of Italian, which soon became the commonly spoken language among educated people all over the not-yet-become country.

Despite its celebrity, Italian is not the only language spoken in Italy. The Italian state recognizes not less than 12 linguistic minorities, even though only three are actually in use in public schools in the areas of interest: French in the Valle d’Aosta, German in the Bolzano province, and Slovenian in the Trieste province.

In addition, Italy is the land of another great linguistic abundance: dialects. According to the UN, 29 dialects are spoken in the country, with the National Statistic Institute estimating that 14% of Italians only speak a local dialect, and another 32,2% alternatively use Italian and a dialect depending on context.

The mix of Italian and dialects is not only part of the daily lives of many Italians, but also influences a big part of Italian literature both of ancient and modern times. Some examples include Carlo Goldoni, Carlo Emilio Gadda or, more recently, Andrea Camilleri, author of the Commissario Montalbano saga.

And now, the solution to our riddle is…the little Republic of San Marino! Did you guess?
